The history of how Pine, Arizona became a great mountain escape

The Beeline Guest House’s community of Pine, Arizona, has a small-town feel with its population of fewer than 2,000 residents. Although it’s a quiet, modern town today, Pine’s history dates to prehistoric times, when members of the Apache tribe inhabited the area.

The current incarnation of Pine dates back more than 140 years to 1879, when a group of settlers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints founded the town as a small cluster of log buildings. As more families moved to the new town, it gained amenities and infrastructure to meet societal needs. The local post office, established in 1884, can still be seen by visitors to the area today.

Some of this infrastructure, such as the Strawberry Schoolhouse built in 1885, was shared with the neighboring community of Strawberry. The schoolhouse is Arizona’s oldest existing school.

Teachers in the area lived at the Pine Inn, located on the Beeline Guest House property, a boutique hotel in Pine. The Beeline Guest House itself once served as home to one of the first families to settle the town, and visitors can also explore the historic settler’s cabin on the property, one of the first cabins built in the area.

Visitors to Pine can explore the Pine-Strawberry Museum, which formerly housed the local LDS chapel beginning in 1917. The museum contains a variety of artifacts from before World War II, providing a glimpse into what life was like in the past in Pine.

The museum is located in the Pine Community Center Historic District, which is also home to other buildings important to Pine’s history such as the 1931-built Cultural Hall and the 1945-built Elementary School.

Since its early days, Pine has evolved to become a tranquil retreat in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest where visitors can explore the variety of scenic views, trails, and creeks nearby. Pine is home to restaurants and shops for tourists to enjoy as well when they are ready for a break from taking part in the nearby outdoor activities.

For those looking to spend a weekend away from the bustle of the Phoenix area, the Beeline Guest House is happy to be your home away from home. Our Southwest-inspired charm and cozy setting offers historically significant suites to suit a variety of travelers’ needs.
