Pine, Arizona is one of the best destinations for outdoor enthusiasts to visit for a trip to get away from the city. Located within the boundaries of the Tonto National Forest, Pine is close to a variety of hiking trails, mountains and lakes.
We also bring in hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts head into Pine for the Pine Trail Run, which offers options for all levels of runners: 5K, 10-mile, and 50K races. The 2025 event is set for May 10 and is the sixth year for the race.
The Pine Trail Run is a non-profit event hosted by Pine Strawberry Fuel Reduction (PSFR), Inc. Volunteers and local non-profit organizations support the event including Pine/Strawberry C.E.R.T, Tonto Amateur Radio Association and Gila County Emergency Management Communications.
The race courses run along the Mogollon Rim at about 6000 ft. elevation, mostly on trails built and maintained by the PSFR trail crew and the Arizona Trail Association. If you want to know more about the race, visit their website.
When you’re finished with outdoor activities for the day, our community has a variety of restaurants, shops and events to explore in a small-town setting. The Beeline Guest House, a highly rated boutique hotel that embraces the Western heritage of the area in its four suites, is within walking distance of many of these amenities.
The Beeline Guest House is also a refreshing base to return to after enjoying a day of hiking the nearby trails. If racing isn’t your thing, here are three trails we recommend for guests who want to explore are trails at their own pace.
Highline, Pine View, and Pine Canyon Loop
Those looking for an easy hike with scenic views and only 354 feet of elevation gain can explore the 2.8-mile Highline, Pine View, and Pine Canyon Loop trail, according to AllTrails. The trail offers a great way to see the surrounding mountains and lush beauty of the Tonto National Forest, complete with two picturesque mountain stream crossings.
The loop begins at the Pine Trailhead, located only 3 minutes by car from the Beeline Guest House. The trail is popular with mountain bikers as well, so be prepared to yield to cyclists on this route.
Hikers visiting Pine looking for a moderately challenging route have the Donahue Trail to explore. At 6.3 miles, this out-and-back route is substantially higher at its peak, with an elevation gain of 1,328 feet, according to AllTrails.
Accessible via the Highline trail, which begins at the Pine Trailhead, the Donahue Trail offers stunning views of the nearby mountains at the top after taking those trekking it through a canyon. The trail crosses a number of creeks, making waterproof boots a valuable piece of gear to have. Visitors should be aware the route is known to have loose rocks as well.
Experienced hikers aiming for a challenge have the Bearfoot Trail to offer a substantial trek. AllTrails reports that Bearfoot Trail measures 11.1 miles out and back, with an elevation gain of 1,322 feet.
A three-minute drive from the Beeline Guest House to the Bearfoot Trailhead offers the opportunity for beautiful views of forests, mountains and creeks abound on this route. Reports from those who have hiked Bearfoot recommend visiting in the morning to see the incredible sunrise sights.
The terrain is noted to be rocky, so take care and be aware of your surroundings.
New trail connections coming soon
Pine Strawberry Fuel Reduction, a local organization dedicated to maintaining the forests in and around Pine to reduce wildfire risks, is also working on connecting trails in the area together. Once complete, the connections will form a loop around the town of Pine itself, providing even more routes to explore.
